In high performance retail
companies, all employees understand their customer's value. The entire
workforce dedicates itself to reducing waste and working on value
stream activities.
- The value stream includes
anything that we do that creates ultimate value for our customers.
- In this case (the retail
industry), the customer would be store management.
- Activities that make retail
store more valuable to its customers might include: laying flooring,
building walls, painting walls, assembling fixtures, mounting displays
and merchandising the displays.
- Each time a setup is created
for a new display, that store is becoming more valuable to its customer.
- Waste is defined as any
movement or time spent that is not a part of the value stream.
- Non-value added activities
might include things like expediting from vendors, looking for missing
fixtures, calling corporate to find out who the setup vendor is
supposed to be, reworking fixtures because plannograms were incorrect,
entering receipt information into the computer, etc.
- A determined pursuit of
reducing waste makes you lean, and keeps you competitive.
