Lean Healthcare is simply about creating
more value for customers/patients by eliminating activities that are
considered waste. Lean focuses on the client/patient and what the
client/patient feels is value. Such thinking is increasingly being
applied to health services in North America as well as the UK to:
- improve the quality of patient
care
- improve safety
- eliminate delays
- reduce length of stay
- while using no more resources.
Five principles of lean thinking
that enhance the quality of healthcare by improving flow in the patient
journey and eliminating waste include:
- Specifying value. Value is any
activity which improves the patient's health, well being and experience.
- Identify the value stream
or patient journey. This is the core set of actions required to
deliver value for patients.
- Make the process and value flow.
Align healthcare processes to facilitate the smooth flow of patients
and information.
- Let the customer pull. The customer
should begin to pull products or services as needed. We should deliver
care on demand, with the resources needed for it.
- Pursue perfection. Develop
and amend processes continuously in pursuit of the ideal.
